About
“A history of dress would be a history of minds; for dress expresses a moral idea; it symbolizes the intellect and the disposition of a nation.” –Oscar Wilde
Why explore the use of animals in fashion? There is an underlying disposition that fashion is a frivolous past time of the idle rich. It is an industry built on accouterment. It is the mode by which we cover our bodies, and so is therefore intrinsically seen as superficial, as it is the mask we hide behind. Karl Lagerfeld, the face for many years of one of the most iconic luxury brands Chanel, said it himself, “Relax, it’s only fashion.” Reflecting this sentiment that fashion is just meant to be fun and beautiful. This is the image that fashion perpetuates, but the truth is that fashion does matter. It is not only a representation of our intellect and our disposition as a nation, but it has an impact on humans and the environment. If we refuse to look at the impact of fashion, and continue to view it a superfluous past time, it will continue to have major destructive impacts for years to come. While objects may appear beautiful they are hiding greed, exploitation, destruction, and in some cases the loss of a life. I am interested in looking at that life.
For Faux is a site created as a by-product of my master's thesis centered around the use of animals in fashion, and how to best communicate to varying audiences. I, with the help of a independent production team in Los Angeles, California created three videos, using three varying communication techniques to test which would be most effective, a rational approach, emotional positive, and emotional negative.
Please feel free to explore the site, watch all three videos, view the resources, and provide feedback. These videos were created to start a conversation.
